Sweden doesn't have one tax-free gift threshold for employees, it has three. Julgåva, jubileumsgåva, and minnesgåva each cover a different occasion, each has its own SEK limit, and each has its own conditions under Skatteverket's rules. Mixing them up is the easiest way to accidentally make a gift fully taxable. Here's how all three work, plus the client-gift rules and some gift ideas that comfortably fit the tightest of the three.
Three separate gift categories
Skatteverket (the Swedish Tax Agency) treats employee gifts as tax-free fringe benefits only if they fall cleanly into one of three categories. Each has a different SEK cap for 2026:
- Julgåva (Christmas gift): 600 SEK incl. VAT. Up from 550 SEK in 2025. Must be given to all employees, or to a large, non-selective employee group. It cannot be cash, a cheque, or a freely-convertible gift card, but a restricted-use voucher redeemable only for specific goods or services can qualify.
- Jubileumsgåva (company-anniversary gift): 1,800 SEK incl. VAT. Up from 1,650 SEK in 2025. This one is easy to confuse with a service anniversary, but it isn't: it applies only when the company itself is celebrating a milestone anniversary (25, 50, 75, 100 years, and so on), not when an individual employee hits a tenure milestone.
- Minnesgåva (commemorative or long-service gift): 15,000 SEK incl. VAT. The most generous of the three, but also the most conditional. The employee needs at least 6 years of cumulative service, and the gift must mark a qualifying occasion: certain round birthdays from age 50, 20 years of service, or the end of employment. Over a career, an employee can typically receive a tax-free minnesgåva on no more than one occasion in addition to the one given when employment ends.
The cliff-edge rule
All three thresholds work the same way: they are cliff-edges, not partial exemptions. If a gift's value exceeds the relevant limit, even by a single krona, the entire value of the gift becomes taxable from the first krona, not just the amount over the threshold. A 650 SEK Christmas gift isn't "50 SEK taxable and 600 SEK tax-free." It's 650 SEK taxable in full. This is Skatteverket's own wording, and it's the single most common way employers accidentally trigger an unwanted tax and payroll-reporting liability.
Because of this, it's worth pricing gifts with some headroom under the limit rather than right up against it, especially once shipping, packaging, or last-minute branding changes are factored into the final cost.

What about client gifts?
Gifts to clients and business contacts follow an entirely separate set of rules from employee gifts, built around a 300 SEK threshold:
- The 300 SEK rule. The deduction threshold is 300 SEK excluding VAT per recipient, and it applies to two distinct types of business gift: representationsgåvor (representation gifts tied to a specific, documented business event, which don't need to carry a logo) and reklamgåvor (promotional or advertising gifts, which must be low-value, impersonal, and carry the company logo, think pens or mugs).
- VAT treatment. For representationsgåvor, input VAT is only deductible on the first 300 SEK (excluding VAT) of the gift's cost. A 650 SEK gift only gets VAT deducted on the 300 SEK base; the remainder is non-deductible.
- Client Christmas gifts. These are normally not deductible at all under Swedish income tax law, unless they separately qualify as a low-value reklamgåva or a documented representationsgåva under the 300 SEK rule above.
Common mistakes
- Confusing julgåva with jubileumsgåva or minnesgåva. Each has a different SEK cap and different qualifying conditions: a service milestone doesn't automatically get the more generous minnesgåva or jubileumsgåva treatment.
- Giving a freely-convertible gift card instead of a restricted-use one. A gift card redeemable anywhere, like cash, disqualifies the gift from tax-free treatment; only vouchers restricted to specific goods or services can count.
- Assuming client Christmas gifts are automatically deductible. They generally aren't, unless the gift separately qualifies as a reklamgåva or representationsgåva under the 300 SEK rule.
