Definition

Plantable seed paper is recycled paper with live seeds pressed into the pulp, made to be planted in soil after it has been read. The sheet absorbs water, breaks down into the ground, and the seeds germinate where the print used to be. It turns cards, tags and inserts into something that ends as a plant instead of a bin liner.

Definition

Plantable seed paper is a paper substrate, usually made from post-consumer waste pulp, with wildflower, herb or vegetable seeds distributed through the sheet during forming. Nothing about it is decorative. The seeds are real and viable, and the paper is deliberately made without coatings that would block water. A typical use looks like this: a company hands out 500 business cards at a trade fair, each card carries a basil seed mix, and the recipient plants the card in a pot instead of filing it away. Three weeks later there is basil on the windowsill with the brand still attached to the memory.

How plantable seed paper works

Production starts with recycled pulp, often cotton offcuts or post-consumer paper, broken down in cold water. Seeds are stirred in at room temperature. Heat and pressure are kept low on purpose, because both destroy seed viability, which is why almost all seed paper is handmade or made on slow, low-heat machines rather than run through a standard paper mill. The slurry is then pressed into sheets, air dried, and cut. The result is thick, textured and slightly uneven, usually somewhere between 120 and 300 gsm.

That handmade character sets the limits. The surface is rough, so fine hairlines, small type and photographic images do not reproduce cleanly. Screen printing, letterpress and flat digital printing work well. Laser printing is a bad idea, because the fuser heat can cook the seeds and the bulky stock jams most office printers. Water-based, soy or vegetable inks are the safe choice. Anything that seals the sheet, such as lamination, plastic film, UV varnish or heavy foil, stops water reaching the seeds and quietly turns a plantable card into a normal one.

Then there is the seed itself. Viability drops over time, so seed paper has a shelf life, generally one to two years when stored cool, dry and out of sunlight. Humidity in a warehouse can start germination inside the box. Seed species also have to suit the destination country. Sending a card with a species that is invasive or restricted in the recipient's region is a real compliance problem, and many countries apply phytosanitary rules to seed crossing borders. Species selection is a decision, not a detail.

Plantable seed paper in branded merch

  1. Event and trade fair collateral. Business cards, badges, invitations and flyers printed on seed paper give people a reason not to bin them at the exit. It is one of the few pieces of printed event material with a second life.
  2. Packaging inserts and hang tags. A seed paper hang tag on an apparel drop, or a thank-you card tucked inside a gift box, extends the story of the product without adding a separate item to the order.
  3. Gift and onboarding kits. Pair a seed paper card with a pot and soil disc for a new-hire welcome or a client gift. It gives the recipient a small action to take, which is what makes eco merch memorable rather than performative.

Plantable seed paper is handmade recycled paper with viable seeds embedded in the pulp, designed to be buried in soil after use so the paper composts and the seeds grow.

5 tips to elevate your Plantable seed paper strategy

TipSteps
Match seeds to the regionChoose species that are legal, native or naturalised where the merch will land, and check seed import rules before shipping across borders.
Skip every coatingNo lamination, UV varnish, plastic film or heavy foil. Anything waterproof cancels the whole point of the paper.
Design for textureUse bold type, solid shapes and high contrast. Avoid small serif text, thin lines and full-bleed photos on a rough sheet.
Print the instructionsAdd short planting directions on the back. Soak, cover with about 5 mm of soil, keep moist, expect sprouts in one to three weeks.
Order close to the momentBuy for a campaign, not for a stockroom. Seed viability drops with age, and warm, humid storage shortens it further.

Key Terminologies

Eco gifts - branded gifts chosen for recycled content, reuse or a low-waste end of life.
RPET - polyester made from recycled plastic bottles, common in bags and apparel.
Recycled cotton - cotton fibre reclaimed from textile waste and respun into new yarn.
GOTS certified - a textile standard covering organic fibre content and social criteria.
Biodegradable - material that breaks down through natural processes without leaving harmful residue.
Post-consumer waste - material recovered after a consumer has used and discarded it, the usual pulp source for seed paper.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does plantable seed paper actually grow?

Yes, provided the seeds are still viable and the paper has no waterproof coating. Soak the sheet, cover it with a thin layer of soil, keep it damp, and most mixes sprout within one to three weeks.

How long does seed paper last before planting?

Seeds usually stay viable for one to two years when the paper is stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Warmth and humidity shorten that window, so buy for a specific campaign rather than for long-term stock.

Can you print on plantable seed paper?

Yes. Screen printing, letterpress and flat digital printing all work with water-based, soy or vegetable inks. Avoid laser printers, because the heat can damage the seeds, and avoid dense ink coverage that seals the surface.

What seeds are used in seed paper?

Wildflower mixes are the most common, along with herbs such as basil, thyme and parsley. The species should be chosen for the market it will be planted in, since some plants are restricted or invasive in certain regions.

Is plantable seed paper compostable?

Yes. The pulp base is recycled paper without plastic coatings, so it breaks down in soil or in a compost heap. Planting it simply means composting it in a place where the seeds can also germinate.
