Compostable packaging is packaging engineered to break down into water, carbon dioxide, mineral salts and nutrient-rich biomass within a set time frame, under specific composting conditions, without leaving toxic residue. It is not the same as biodegradable packaging. Compostable means tested, certified and bound to a deadline. In merch, it shows up as mailer bags, poly bags, tissue paper, tape and void fill.

The word only means something when it is tied to a standard. In Europe that standard is EN 13432; in North America it is ASTM D6400. Both require the material to disintegrate to under 10% of its original mass on a 2mm sieve within 12 weeks, biodegrade at least 90% within 6 months, stay under heavy metal limits and produce compost that does not harm plant growth. Look for the Seedling logo, OK compost INDUSTRIAL, or OK compost HOME on the artwork.
A practical example: a branded hoodie shipped in a starch and PBAT mailer bag carrying the Seedling mark. Sent to an industrial composting facility, that bag is gone within three months. Sent to landfill, it behaves roughly like conventional plastic. The certification describes a destination, not a promise about any bin.
How compostable packaging works
Most compostable films are blends. Starch or PLA, a polymer made from fermented plant sugars, provides the bio-based content, and a co-polyester such as PBAT provides the flexibility and tear strength that pure PLA lacks. Paper-based options such as glassine, kraft tissue and honeycomb wrap are compostable by default as long as the coatings, inks and adhesives are too. Water-based inks and starch glues pass. Metallised foil, plastic tape and silicone-coated release liners do not.
Breakdown depends on heat, moisture and microbial activity. Industrial composting runs at 55 to 60 degrees Celsius, which is what most certified films need. Home composting sits closer to ambient temperature, so a bag that carries only the INDUSTRIAL mark will sit intact in a garden heap for a year or more. That gap is the single biggest source of greenwashing complaints in the category, and the reason the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation is tightening what can carry the claim.
The trade-offs are real. Compostable films typically cost 2 to 4 times more than conventional LDPE poly bags, have a shorter shelf life, and can weaken in humid warehouses. They also lack the moisture barrier of standard plastic, so garments stored for long periods can pick up damp. For most merch programmes the honest question is not whether compostable beats plastic, but whether the packaging is needed at all. Removing an individual poly bag usually beats replacing it.
Compostable packaging in branded merch
- Individual garment bags. Certified starch or PLA blend bags replace the LDPE poly bag around each folded tee or hoodie. This is the highest-volume swap in any apparel programme and the one recipients actually see when they open a box.
- Mailer bags for direct-to-recipient sends. When you ship one item to one home address, the mailer is the entire unboxing. A compostable mailer with a printed one-colour logo and a short line explaining the disposal route does more brand work than a sticker on a plain box.
- Fill, wrap and seal inside gift boxes. Kraft honeycomb wrap, unbleached tissue, paper tape and starch-based void fill turn a recycled cardboard gift box into a single-stream package. Consistency matters here. One strip of plastic tape makes the rest of the pack harder to process.
