25 Best Company Swag Ideas Employees Will Actually Use (2026)

Most company swag fails for one reason: nobody uses it. The stuff that works is the stuff that earns a permanent place on a desk, in a bag, or on a commute, and quietly carries your brand everywhere it goes. The list below is built from what teams actually reach for, leaning on the items that move most in real order data.

These are 25 of the best company swag ideas employees will genuinely use, across apparel, drinkware, bags, tech, office, and a few practical extras. Every item is fully customisable with your logo and ships at corporate quantities. Prices are indicative per-unit at typical volumes, with the minimum order quantity (MOQ) noted for each.

First, the measured version: which swag actually gets worn

Almost every swag listicle ranks items by how good they look in a photograph. We have something better for the apparel and bags on this list: a measured wear rate.

Sunday commissioned research agency Sapience and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel to study a branded merchandise programme at Belgian railway operator NMBS/SNCB. 258 people who received or bought items from that programme were surveyed, and one question was simply how many times they had worn each item. That produces the table below.

Chart showing measured wear rates by merchandise item, with bags and sweaters highest and plain socks lowest

Measured wear rate per item, from the Sapience and VUB study of the NMBS/SNCB merchandise programme.

ItemWorn more than twiceWorn once or twiceNever worn
Bag (n=13)69%15%15%
Sweater (n=67)67%22%10%
Christmas socks (n=50)66%16%18%
T-shirt (n=75)59%28%13%
Sun hat (n=9)56%33%11%
Christmas sweater (n=75)55%40%5%
Banana bag (n=26)54%27%19%
Plain socks (n=26)50%19%31%
Christmas hat (n=17)41%47%12%

Four things fall out of that table, and they should change what you order.

  • Bags and sweaters win. Both cleared two thirds worn more than twice. They are used year-round, they suit every body and every wardrobe, and nobody has to decide whether the branding is appropriate today.
  • Character beats blandness. Christmas socks hit 66% worn more than twice with an 18% never-worn rate. Plain socks managed 50% and a 31% never-worn rate, the worst score in the study. Same product, same programme, different design. The distinctive version won.
  • Seasonal is not the same as wasted. The Christmas sweater had the lowest never-worn rate of any item at 5%. It is worn on fewer days, but almost nobody throws it away, which is the number that matters for waste.
  • Headwear is the weak category. The Christmas hat was the only item where "once or twice" beat "more than twice". Caps and beanies still earn a place, but do not build a programme around them.

Across the whole sample, 86% had worn their item at least once, 9% had not, and 5% had bought it for someone else.

One more finding worth acting on before you choose anything: people who received visibly branded items reported higher engagement (8.6 versus 8.1) and higher satisfaction (8.4 versus 7.7) than people whose items carried discreet branding. A logo hidden inside a collar does not do the work.

Two honest caveats. The study covers one organisation in one country, so treat the wear rates as a strong signal rather than a universal constant, and the smallest groups (bags at n=13, sun hats at n=9) carry wide margins. And the data covers apparel and bags only, so the drinkware, tech and office items further down this list are ranked on order volume and usefulness, not on measured wear. Full method, sample and limitations are in the scientific study on company swag and employee engagement.

What makes swag employees actually use?

  • Genuinely useful. Daily-use items (desk, bag, commute) beat novelty every time, and that is where repeat brand impressions come from.
  • Quality that's kept. Decent materials and a tasteful logo make swag worth keeping rather than binning.
  • Visible branding. The engagement and satisfaction gap above sits between visible and discreet logos, not between branded and unbranded. Put the mark where it can be seen.
  • Distinctive, not safe. The plain-versus-Christmas socks split is the cheapest lesson in the study: the item with personality got worn, the neutral one got a drawer.
  • Right mix. Pair budget high-volume items with a few hero pieces so every audience is covered.
  • Sensible economics. MOQ and per-unit cost matter at scale, and both are flagged below.

How to choose across a mixed program

  • Mass giveaways / events: Lip Balm, Pens, Canvas Tote, Classic Mug — wide reach, tiny per-unit cost. The tote is the one with wear-rate evidence behind it.
  • Onboarding / staff kits: Tee, Notebook, Coffee Mug, Steel Bottle, Cap, Socks — useful daily, mid-budget. Give the socks a design worth wearing.
  • Hero / milestone gifts: Hoodie, RollTop Backpack, Powerbank, Ocean Bottle — the pieces people remember and keep. Bags and knitwear are the two categories the study ranked highest.

Whatever you pick, lead with usefulness, make the branding visible rather than apologetic, and give the design some character. That combination is what separates the 69% from the 31% never worn.

Where the data comes from

The wear rates on this page come from a study Sunday commissioned with research agency Sapience and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, covering the branded merchandise programme at Belgian railway operator NMBS/SNCB. 258 people were surveyed. Alongside wear rate, the study measured employee engagement, satisfaction, brand image and NPS against the organisation's own existing benchmarks.

The findings are correlational rather than causal, and they cover one organisation in one country. Read the full study on company swag and employee engagement for the method, the sample, the complete results and the limitations. Frequently asked questions

Which company swag actually gets worn the most?
In a 258-person study of a branded merchandise programme run with Sapience and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, bags scored highest at 69% worn more than twice, followed by sweaters at 67% and seasonal socks at 66%. T-shirts reached 59%. Plain socks were the weakest at 50%, with 31% never worn.
What company swag do employees actually use?
Practical, good-quality items they reach for daily: bags, sweaters and hoodies, t-shirts, insulated bottles, notebooks, pens, powerbanks and backpacks — branded visibly enough to be recognised, and distinctive enough to be worth wearing.
What is the best budget company swag?
High-volume, low-cost items like recycled pens (from about €1.33), tote bags (from about €1.79), lip balm (from about €0.54), notebooks and ceramic mugs deliver wide reach without stretching budget. Of these, tote bags have the strongest wear-rate evidence behind them.
What makes good employee swag?
Genuine everyday usefulness, quality materials, visible rather than hidden branding, a design with some character, and sensible order economics — a workable minimum order quantity and per-unit cost.
How much does branded company swag cost?
It ranges widely: budget desk and event items from under €1 to €8 per unit, mid-range apparel and bottles around €10 to €25, and hero pieces like backpacks or premium hoodies from about €25 to €40 per unit at corporate quantities.
How much company swag never gets worn?
In the study, 9% of recipients had never worn their item and 5% had bought it for someone else, so 86% had worn it at least once. The rate varies sharply by product: 5% never worn for the Christmas sweater against 31% for plain socks.
